Understanding Arthritis
by Dolores DeParr

Chances are good that you or someone close to you suffers
from one of the more than 100 varieties of arthritis. This
confusing disease is responsible for a wide range of pain,
plus stiffness and swelling in joints that makes it
difficult or impossible to carry out ordinary, everyday
activities.

The second highest cause of worker disability in America,
arthritis appears more frequently in women than in men and
more than 66 million people in the United States -- that's
one person in every three -- is suffering from its effects.

Arthritis Varieties

Many individual conditions are grouped under single names
and to list all of the more than 100 types of arthritis
would take pages and pages. A web search for a specific
type will turn up a vast array of tips and background
information in minutes and is a good place to start if
you're looking for help in dealing with arthritis.

Generally, the types of arthritis are named in regard to
the part of the body they most commonly affect. Fortunately
most types can be treated successfully these days, and the
pain, stiffness, and swelling can be eased greatly. In
addition, other symptoms -- such as sleep disturbances --
can be helped as well.

Osteoarthritis is very common, as are others such as
juvenile arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and
even gout. As with most degenerative conditions, early
diagnosis and treatment are your best defense.

Arthritis Treatment

Of course, specific treatments depend upon the type and
severity of the arthritis, but for best results, beginning
treatment as early as possible is best, not only for
dealing with pain and discomfort but for slowing the
progression of the disease. Keep track of changes in your
symptoms and consult your physician whenever you have a
question or feel unsure.

You may also find that mild to strenuous exercise is
helpful in reducing pain and strengthening joints. Of
course, it's always wise to consult your physician to set
up a plan that is safe and works for you.
